Stronger Every Day

Laura Olinger, founder of vintage moves

This is a list of my top recommendations for improving your fitness, balance and longevity. They aren’t a class, they are things for you to do in the minute, few minutes, 10 minutes every day, any time you have a small bit of time. For the most part, this is a mindshift to USING spare minutes wisely instead of “thinking” we need to rest all of the time. Our bodies were made to MOVE!

Every time I present this idea in a class I have to add the possibility of Doctor’s waiting rooms looking like an exercise opportunity. What if people were MOVING instead of SITTING and waiting? Or, what if they were moving while they are sitting? All of that is possible. Here are some suggestions:

  • Hallelujah! From a chair, look up. Reach up. And stand UP!

    • How many Hallelujah’s can you you do in 1 minute? Goal: 25

  • Stand on one foot. Tap a toe on the floor or a hand on the wall/desk/chair if you need an assist.

  • Get down to the floor, and back up to standing. Your way. Practice often! Get coaching if you need it.

  • Jog in place. 1 minute, 1 song, while the dog sniffs.

  • Using a bottom step. Step up on one foot to a straight knee, and drop back down to the floor level on the other foot. Hand on the railing for support if needed. Repeat, many times. Other foot too.

In a chair

  • As If. Press down into your feet “as if” getting up. (See Hallelujah! instructions above.)

  • Stretch and squeeze. Open and close hands and feet.

  • Sit UP. Bring your back OFF of the chair. Align ear, shoulder, elbow and hip in a straight line.

  • Straddle stretch. Scoot forward. Knees wide. Engage bum muscles to keep knees above ankles. Twisting variation: Place an elbow on knee and rotate opposite shoulder away from the knee to look at the ceiling.

These give you a good start. Reach out to us for more good ideas. And let us know how it is going! Laura@vintagemoves.co .
